Trafford Palazzo Manchester, UK
Acting as delivery architects, Corstorphine & Wright were appointed by Vinci Construction UK Ltd working on behalf of Intu at the Trafford Centre, Manchester.
The £90m refurbishment of Trafford Palazzo – formerly Barton Square includes extending the retail space onto the upper floor which adds more than 110,000sq.ft, with new tenants including Primark.
Keeping the majority of Trafford Palazzo open during construction was a key challenge for the project team and consequently much of the work was undertaken outside trading hours. All of the structural steelwork erection was carried out overnight, using cranes positioned in the central courtyard. An extensive clean-up operation was conducted every morning and the cranes, along with other items of equipment, were positioned behind hoardings during the day to create clear circulation routes for shoppers.
The refurbishment features a new, fully glazed roof and dome spanning over 35m across the existing Mall, constructed from over 1,800 pieces of glass, and weighing over 250 tonnes, along with new granite flooring throughout.
