DL1 Darlington, UK
Feethams (now DL1) is a flagship 1.75 acre mixed used leisure development containing a 9 screen cinema, 80 bed hotel and 7 restaurants and bars and public realm.
It occupies a prime position in the centre of Darlington and creates an integrated leisure destination in addition to a cohesive and active sustainable public realm.
We designed the development to reflect the wider Darlington vernacular, in particular, it’s historic railway heritage. Sitting comfortably into a key gateway location for visitors arriving into Darlington from the Historic Railway Station, the robust ‘railway arch’ design of the development plinth helps to define Feethams as an integral part of the Darlington landscape.
Our design addressed the leisure leakage spend from Darlington Town Centre caused by the popularity of out of town leisure destinations in nearby Teesside. To aide this, we created active frontages and a podium level landscaped public realm space act as a link to town centre drawing both local people and visitors into this historic part of the town.
