Bourlon Barracks Sandhurst Block Sandhurst, UK
The redevelopment of the Grade II-listed Sandhurst Block won the Sanctuary 2019 Heritage Project Award.
The Sandhurst Block is a Grade II-listed building once used as living accommodation – but it had fallen into disrepair.Â
We were engaged to carry out an assessment study for the block. The goal was to determine how to achieve maximum value, considering the cost of maintaining the historic building and meeting outstanding needs in the barracks.
Sandhurst Block is a grand, imposing building with a robust envelope and a high volume of space. We recommended converting it into a combined garrison and brigade headquarters.
With a creative and considered design approach, the DIO could then reconfigure the block to create much-needed office capacity – and save money compared with building new offices and maintaining an unused facility.
Our design carefully managed operational and security complexities while maximising efficiencies.
Units have their own entrance, and distinctive routes through the building have their own access controls. There are more than 500 rooms over 3 floors, and personnel enjoy modern office spaces that integrate with the historical setting.Â
We also designed for sustainability to reduce running costs. This included sensitively incorporating hidden draught-proofing strips to improve windows’ thermal performance and minimise heat loss. Solar panels on an adjacent building provide 15% of Sandhurst Block’s energy requirements without impacting its external appearance.
