BLOC Hotels, Gatwick London, UK
An ongoing relationship was established with BLOC Hotels, working on numerous schemes with various RIBA stages from feasibility, to planning to technical design.
We were initially appointed by Bloc Hotels to carry out the client side “technical/design advisor” role during the 10 month construction period for an exciting project located at Gatwick Airport.
Gatwick Phase I consisted of the conversion of the 5 storey Norfolk House office building to provide a new 245 room hotel. With a stunning location, directly over the South Terminal, the entrance to the hotel sits directly on the main airport concourse, adjacent to the departure gates.
The project was technically demanding, bringing issues of security, acoustic performance, supplier and sub-contractor review and quality monitoring.
Following the highly successful launch of Phase I, we were then commissioned to develop proposals for a Phase II extension to increase the overall hotel to 476 rooms. Providing a total of 231 rooms, the Phase II extension will be built above the existing South Terminal departures gate and will be designed to accommodate multiple off-site fabrication techniques to simplify construction and to minimise the programme.
Due to the complex logistics of building in a live airport environment, several Modern Methods of Construction were considered, including full modular rooms, pre-fabricated bathroom pods and light gauge steel framed, panelised solutions.
Further to this, as part of our ongoing relationship, we were also appointed to develop a detailed set of design and technical brand standards which reflect their aspirations for the future growth.
The standards cover all aspects of their hotels including spatial information for all spaces, front and back of house, accommodation schedules, room designs, components, finishes, technical standards, schedules. The completed brand standards are used as the key design brief and standards to be achieved on all BLOC Hotels.
Every project starts with a conversation.
