Elinga Gineikaite joined the Corstorphine & Wright Darlington studio as a year 10 student from our partner school Longfield Academy of Sport. As part of National Apprenticeship Week, she has shared with us her journey from work experience to T Levels and her future career aspirations.
Elinga’s passion for architecture was kindled by her love for building games like Minecraft and The Sims. This led her to seek out work experience opportunities eager to learn and immerse herself in the field. Her week-long placement with us at Corstorphine & Wright inspired her to want more real-world exposure.
Elinga opted for a T Level in Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction (Built Environment)Â at Middlesbrough College, a decision that set her apart from her peers pursuing traditional A Levels. She emphasises the practical, industry-focussed experience T Levels offer, providing a comprehensive understanding of the built environment industry and preparing students for the real-world. Her commitment to this path is evident in her proactive approach, applying for degree apprenticeships and university placements to further her career goals.
Despite her initial aspiration to become an Architect, Elinga’s experiences led her to pivot towards a role as a Design Manager. This change came during a site visit, where she realised her preference for a career that balanced office work with practical, on-site involvement.
Throughout her T Level placement at Corstorphine & Wright, Elinga has been actively working on diverse projects, from designing a pub to refurbishing a church. Her participation in team meetings, conversations with our talented Darlington team, specifically T Level mentor Andrew Brown, and feedback on her work has enriched her understanding of the industry, offering insights beyond her in-classroom assignments.
Reflecting on her journey, Elinga acknowledges initial challenges, such as feeling intimidated in a professional setting and balancing her commitments. However, she underscores the importance of stepping out of one’s comfort zone and embracing learning opportunities. Her advice to students considering their next steps is to pursue subjects and paths that genuinely interest them, highlighting the advantages of T Levels for those with a clear career focus.
Elinga’s story is a testament to the power of following one’s passion, seeking out practical experiences, and staying open to new opportunities. Her journey from a game-loving student to a confident design manager in training is an inspiring example for anyone navigating the transition from education to a fulfilling career.
