Corstorphine + Wright have secured planning permission for a shipping container market in Reading.

Working with Asset Managers, Moorgarth Group and Inception Holdings, the plans are part of a wider master plan to redevelop and transform the Broad Street Mall shopping centre in Reading.

The Shopping Centre has been undergoing a large-scale overhaul since 2015, with Corstorphine + Wright helping to deliver a 2.2 million pound upgrade to the mall interior, in addition to a 1.6 million refurbishment of the Fountain House office tower, which sits above the centre car park.

The client’s vision is to create a more bespoke, contemporary offering for the city, aimed at smaller local retailers, traders, artists and younger shoppers. The container market is an important step in this process, located near to the newly finish Queens Court student residential building, Hexagon Theatre and Market Hall.

The market will be constructed using 16 stacked shipping containers across two and three storeys to create a boutique urban marketplace and venue space that will help improve an area of the city that is in need of regeneration, as well as creating a link between Broad Street Mall and several key cultural areas.
