Corstorphine & Wright is pleased to share that the final stage of the Coney Street Riverside masterplan has received unanimous approval from the City of York Council Planning Committee. This milestone marks a significant step towards revitalising York’s historic riverside, reconnecting the city centre with the River Ouse through thoughtful design and sensitive regeneration.
The approved plans focus on the refurbishment, conversion, and extension of Grade II listed buildings at 3-7 Coney Street. This phase will introduce two retail units, two restaurant and café spaces, and seven apartments on the upper floors. These additions reflect a commitment to celebrating York’s architectural heritage while meeting the city’s evolving needs.
At the centre of the design is a new “snickelway” – a quintessentially York feature – which will provide a vital link between Coney Street and the River Ouse walkway. This passageway will open into public realm designed to be enjoyed by both locals and visitors.
This final phase complements the overarching Coney Street Riverside masterplan, a project led by York-based developer Helmsley Group. The vision encompasses 250,000 square feet of mixed-use spaces, including retail, leisure, commercial, residential, and student accommodation, alongside carefully curated public spaces. The comprehensive approach aims to establish a destination of national significance while bolstering connectivity and accessibility across central York.
