The 2022 Tall Buildings Awards Finalists have been published and Corstorphine & Wright has been shortlisted for two awards for our work at Canon Green Campus, Manchester: Best Residential Tall Building and The Sustainable Tall Building Awards.

Canon Green Court is part of the £22.5M Canon Green Campus development in Trinity, located to the North of Manchester, within walking distance to the City Centre. It’s the largest affordable housing development in the area.

On behalf of Salix Homes and with Willmott Dixon as contractor, Corstorphine & Wright designed a new build eleven storey building with 108 affordable units as well as undertaking a refurbishment programme for the two existing 1960s social housing schemes:

  1. Westminster House, a three storey-apartment block consisting of 33 units
  2. Canon Green Court, and an eight-storey residential building with 110 units

Originally the plan was to add a new build extension to the existing Canon Green. Through our collaborative design process with Salix Homes and Wilmott Dixon and holding several resident consultation events, it became apparent that a new build standalone scheme would be the preferred option for all stakeholders. Residential input was vital and throughout the design phase. 50-60 residents met monthly to review and discuss the proposed plans helping shape the development.

Following this extensive consultation, we developed a design for a high quality eleven-storey new build residential building, consisting of a commercial ground floor and 108 residential units, flanking the primary road into the city centre. The scheme was 100% affordable to support Salford’s housing strategy and was funded by Homes England.

Our challenge from our client Salix Homes was to achieve a balance of good design, sustainability, and quality, whilst being respectful to the development cost and buildability.

Our ambitious proposals transformed the appearance and living facilities at Canon Green Campus. It has delivered essential improvement work which residents have been calling for, as well as providing more desperately needed homes for local people.

As part of this project, we aligned with the objectives set out in The Building a Safer Future Charter. The Building a Safer Future Charter was originally developed by a group of early adopters including contractors, housing associations and local authorities, with a vision of having an industry committed to putting people’s safety first. The Charter has been designed to drive the systemic culture change required to ensure buildings are safe for those living and working in them.

Additionally, the Civil and Structural Engineering Consultants, ELLUC Projects, who worked on Canon Green Campus has been shortlisted for Best Tall Building Structural Engineer as well.

We are thrilled that this scheme has been recognised by the Tall Buildings Awards and look forward to the awards ceremony later this year.
