Bargate Quarter Southampton, UK
This scheme to transform the former Bargate Shopping Centre is set to open up and celebrate some of Southampton’s richest historical assets.
At almost £100 million, the investment into the city will see the redundant 1980s shopping centre demolished and the site transformed into a vibrant quarter, delivering a residential-led scheme with retail at lower street-facing levels.
The Bargate Quarter will deliver over 500 new build-to-rent apartments, including townhouses, all set across 13 blocks of accommodation.
The historic town walls, which have been hidden for the past 30 years, will be a key feature of the new development.
A historic Grade I listed, Scheduled Ancient Monument, Bargate will be celebrated once again as a gateway to the city. The scheme is designed to work in harmony with the medieval town walls to better utilise their potential as key features of the site.
The original shopping centre will be moved back to expose and reveal the town walls – and create a new street running through the development. A series of courtyards will be created around the town walls and the Bargate, giving them greater prominence and utilising their character to create a sense of place.Â
