Our sensitive transformation of a Grade II-listed Second World War bunker into a commercially viable holiday home has been shortlisted for an AJ Small Projects Award 2025.
Located within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Transmitter Bunker transforms a forgotten relic of the Second World War into an extraordinary, commercially viable holiday home. Originally part of the ‘Chain Home’ radar system that helped defend Britain during the Battle of Britain, this Grade II-listed structure posed a unique design challenge to preserve its historic character while creating a liveable, sustainable space.
Working closely with conservation officers and heritage consultants, Corstorphine & Wright retained the raw concrete interiors and original entrance, maintaining the authentic atmosphere of the building. A carefully engineered glazed ‘bomb blast’ opening introduces natural light and reveals sweeping views over Ringstead Bay, ensuring the space feels connected to its stunning landscape.
This shortlisting celebrates the team’s dedication to sensitive, inventive design and the remarkable potential of reimagining historic structures for modern use. Congratulations to the whole team and the other remarkable projects shortlisted this year.
